Buenos Aires, Queen of the River Plate, Buenos Aires, my beloved homeland, listen to my song, for my life goes with it.

In my hours of fever and revelry, sated with pleasure and madness, I think of you, my homeland, to soothe my bitterness.

Buenos Aires nights, beneath your mantle, joy and tears walk close together. Laughter and kisses, revelry without end, everything is forgotten with champagne.

And as people leave the milonga, a little girl can be heard asking for bread; there is a reason why, in tango, a sorrow always sobs.

And to the grumbling rhythm of the bellows, a wealthy man deceives a woman, and the weeping of the violin paints the local soul.

Buenos Aires, like a beloved woman, when you are far away, you must be loved all the more, and one must say throughout one's life: better to die than to forget you.

ENGLISH

Queen of the River Plate and homeland Queen of the River Plate evokes Buenos Aires’s connection with the Río de la Plata. The narrator addresses the city as beloved homeland and later as a beloved woman: geographical belonging becomes an emotional bond.

Farra, gotán, bacán and mina Farra means revelry; corrida here suggests continuity. Gotán reverses tango’s syllables through vesre. Bacán is a well-off man; mina is a lunfardo word for a woman; embrollar means to deceive or ensnare with words.

Milonga and bellows Milonga here means the dance setting or gathering, not necessarily the musical genre. The bellows evoke bandoneons: their sound grumbles while the violin weeps. The instruments are given human gestures and emotions.

Champagne and bread The girl asking for bread interrupts the festivities and reveals inequality that champagne cannot resolve. Tango’s sorrow therefore extends beyond romantic separation. The ending returns to distance: loving the city also means remembering what it contains.
