ENGLISH
Convento, calico and silk convento here abbreviates conventillo, a shared tenement in the outer neighborhoods. Pilchas are clothes; percal is cotton fabric. Its contrast with silk makes visible the change of social standing the narrator reproaches Margarita for.
The slang of accusation embrocar means to recognize or notice; pelandruna, lazy; abacanada, looking well-to-do. Macanas are lies or nonsense; cafisho, a pimp; berretines, whims or aspirations; cajetilla, a smartly dressed man; afilar, to court. Gil and otario mean a gullible fool.
From Margarita to Margot the French name accompanies new clothes and luxurious spaces. Armenonville, Petit and Julien appear as settings of that world in the lyric. The jealous, resentful voice accuses: its judgments about the woman are not a verified biography.
Keeping food in the pot parar la olla means obtaining enough to eat. The ending sets the daughter's luxury against the mother's labor. “Franciscan poverty” intensifies scarcity, while the kerosene light closes the return to the tenement.
