Muchacho.

Original en español · Traducción en English.

ORIGINAL · ESPAÑOL · 01

Muchacho que porque la suerte quiso vivís en un primer piso de un palacete central, que pa' vicios y placeres, para farras y mujeres disponés de un capital. Muchacho que no sabés el encanto de haber derramado llanto sobre un pecho de mujer; y no sabés qué es secarse en una timba y armarse para volverse a meter;

TRADUCCIÓN · ENGLISH · 01

Young man, you who, because fortune wished it, live on the first floor of a little mansion downtown, who for vices and pleasures, for revelry and women, have a fortune at your disposal. Young man, you who do not know the charm of having shed tears upon a woman's breast; and do not know what it is to go broke gambling, then scrape together a stake to get back into the game;

you who say that a streetwise tango does not disturb your calm, and that your soul does not weep when a bandoneon moans; you who, if you have any feeling, keep it asleep, for everything you have obtained by paying like a fool.

Tell me whether in your idle life, under the moonlight or beneath a streetlamp, you have never felt like a poet and told a young girl that she is more beautiful than the sun.

Tell me whether you know the harmony, the sweet many-colored beauty of afternoons in the outer neighborhoods, when the factory girls walk by, alluring and showing off, beneath rustling calico...

ENGLISH

Feeling that cannot be bought the mansion and the fortune place the young man in a life sheltered by money. The narrator does not ask for more wealth: he asks about tears, love and poetry, experiences he believes missing behind that comfort.

Farra, timba and chabón farra means partying; timba, gambling for money. Secarse means going broke, and armarse, gathering enough to gamble again. Chabón here has its older meaning of fool or naive person, rather than today's “guy”.

Rante, pelandruna and pebeta rante evokes the popular neighborhood world; pelandruna, an idle life; pebeta means a young girl. The moaning bandoneon calls for an inner response: the reproach targets sleeping feeling.

Factory girls beneath calico fabriqueras are factory workers; diqueras, women showing themselves with flirtation or ostentation. Sounding calico makes moving clothes audible. The many colors mix with light and human presence: the neighborhood becomes an experience for the senses.
