ENGLISH
“Whether there were silks in my cradle” evokes a birth surrounded by comfort and wealth. Silk and rags create a material contrast between the former life and present poverty.
“How much I have” and “what I am worth” the lyric challenges a gaze that confuses possessions with personal worth. Others read his clothes; the narrator holds a history they never ask about.
Forgetting without fully forgetting he says he forgets, yet remembers who he was and what he will no longer be. That tension can be read as a way to survive: keeping the past silent does not mean losing memory.
