Patotero sentimental.

Gang tough, king of the dance hall, gang tough, sentimental. Beneath your laughter you hide a great longing to cry. The years keep slipping by, and into my heart no love has entered. In my life I had girls, plenty of girls, but never a woman...

When I've had a couple too many, in my heart there begins to rise the memory of that faithful woman who truly loved me and whom I, ungrateful, abandoned. I mocked her love without thinking I might feel it later, without knowing that as the years went by, they would cruelly embitter this king of the cabaret.

ORIGINAL · ESPAÑOL · 03

¡Pobrecita!

Poor thing! How she wept when, blind, I cast her aside...! The gang was watching me, and... a man mustn't give in!

Gang tough, king of the dance hall, you will always remember her. Today you laugh... but your laughter is nothing but a longing to cry!

ENGLISH

“Patotero” and “patota” name the man associated with a gang and the group watching him. Pressure from his companions influences his decision to reject the woman.

“A man mustn't give in” states the rule of masculinity the character follows before others. The lyrics reveal its cost: appearing tough and later regretting what was lost.

“Girls” and “a woman” contrast, in the character's voice, many passing relationships with a bond he failed to recognize. His final laughter can be read as a mask for regret.
