A confession inside the story First the man who finds him in the shop speaks; then we hear the stranger. Paseo Colón places the scene in Buenos Aires. Sitting beside him changes the initial view of a drunk into listening to a wounded person.
Manhood and sentimiento gaucho The title and the statement about suffering present an ideal of manhood able to bear grief. They do not prove that suffering belongs only to men. The voice admits vulnerability while trying to preserve pride and generosity after abandonment.
The slash and the clover Betrayal cuts like a knife blade. Fragrant clover, by contrast, gives scent even to the person who plucks it. The opposition turns injury into a possibility of giving affection: the character wants to keep loving despite being hurt.
The difficulty of forgiveness Not wanting to see her coexists with promising forgiveness if she returns. Killing out of jealousy belongs to the code the character invokes; it does not justify violence. Love is finally presented as a force capable of overcoming revenge.
