Tarde gris.

Despite the pain, I come to see you. Yesterday I learned you were so unwell. I, who swore to hate you until death, could bear it no longer and came to the hospital. For all the harm you have done me, I wished to exact payment for this bitter resentment, but then I felt within my chest my heart beating with holy love.

Why are you crying? Does my presence at this moment bring you sorrow too? Or, remembering your empty life, have you repented and now wish to be good? The gray afternoon, as gray as my sorrow, accompanied my grief over your wound, for your kisses brought into my life the joy of dreaming and the longing to live.

ORIGINAL · ESPAÑOL · 03

No vine aquí a reprocharte...

I did not come here to reproach you... Everything has passed... and I would rather forget... God wishes me to forgive you again and for us to start over once more. When your ailments are healed, my heart will awaken again. The gentle springs will return, and as before we shall have a home.

ENGLISH

A visit despite resentment The hospital gives the song a concrete vulnerability. The character had sworn hatred but comes when he learns the other person is unwell. Visiting turns the urge to exact payment for harm into the wish to care again.

Questions and judgment The voice asks whether she cries because of his presence or repentance, without receiving an explicit answer. “Empty life” and “be good” belong to the speaker’s interpretation. The lyrics alone do not establish the illness’s causes or the woman’s history.

An afternoon of the same color External grayness reflects inward sorrow. Quebranto expresses pain and dejection; her wound brings her suffering close to his. Remembering kisses introduces into sadness the joy that first gave the relationship life.

Springs and home Gentle springs imagine emotional life flowing again. God and holy love give forgiveness a spiritual language. The final home is the character’s hope: the song proposes a new beginning but does not yet tell of a completed reconciliation.
