When luck—that fickle dame— lets you down time and again and leaves you stranded; when you’re adrift on the street, aimless and desperate; when you have neither faith nor even yesterday’s yerba drying in the sun; when you’ve worn out your soles scrounging for the few coins to buy a meal... only then will you feel the world’s indifference— deaf and mute as it is.

You’ll see it’s all a lie, you’ll see that love is nothing, that the world doesn't care... Wander on!... Wander on!... Even if life breaks you, even if pain tears at you, never expect any help, not a hand, nor a favor.

When the batteries run dry in all the doorbells you keep pressing, looking for a brotherly heart to die in an embrace... When they cast you aside after wringing you dry— just as they did to me. When you realize that, right beside you, they’re already trying on the clothes you’re about to leave behind... You’ll remember this poor fool who one day, weary, started to bark!

ENGLISH

“Yira, yira” evokes walking on, going round without finding a way out. In these lyrics, that movement is marked by loneliness.

“Tamangos”, “mango” and “morfar” mean shoes, money and to eat. Wearing out shoes looking for money to buy food makes hardship tangible.

“Yesterday’s yerba drying in the sun” refers to used mate leaves, dried so they can be reused: an image of poverty.

“Cinchar”, “manyar” and “otario” mean to work hard, to understand, and a fool or a naive person. The narrator recognizes exhaustion and betrayed trust.

“Started to bark” can be read as a protest born of exhaustion. The ending makes audible the voice of someone nobody listens to.
